WESTSIDE WONDER

West Virginia’s first industry was salt mining. West Virginia also first made the pepperoni roll and still serves them today. A pepperoni roll seasoned salt made with locally mined artisanal salt represents Charleston, West Virginia. The bright, painterly style of the label reflects the West Side Wonder public mural in downtown Charleston, West Virginia.

The pictorial images used on the label are an understanding of the people and the tools they used to make the history of salt mining possible. The brand seeks to be inclusive in celebrating those often overlooked who worked in the salt mines.

Booker T. Washington moved to West Virginia with his parents after the Civil War. He worked in the mines with his father and first learned to read the number 18. Eighteen was his father’s assigned number to stamp on the barrels he had packed.
